OSHA Inspections - What You Need to Know
Several of our members have recently been visited by OSHA for routine inspections. In the event you are preparing for your own housing authority OSHA inspection, following is some helpful information to help you prepare.
For apartment maintenance, the top 2924 OSHA violations frequently involve the following:
Fall Protection: This is consistently the most cited violation, encompassing issues like inadequate fall protection systems, improper training, and lack of safety measures at heights.
Hazard Communication: Ensuring employees understand the hazards associated with chemicals they work with is crucial, including proper labeling, safety data sheets (SDS), and training.
Ladders: Improper use, maintenance, and setup of ladders are common violations, including ladders not extending sufficiently, being placed on unstable surfaces, or lacking proper training for employees.
Respiratory Protection: Providing and ensuring the proper use of respirators when necessary to protect employees from airborne hazards is essential, including training, fit testing, and maintenance.
Lockout/Tagout: Procedures to prevent accidental machine start-ups or energy releases during maintenance and repair are imperative, including written procedures, employee training, and periodic inspections.
Personal Protective Equipment: Providing and ensuring the use of appropriate eye and face protection for hazards like flying objects, chemicals, and welding is essential.
