Summer Fire Safety

Summer brings longer days, family cookouts, and celebrations-but it's also a time when home fires increase. A few simple precautions can help keep you, your family, and your neighbors safe.

Fireworks Safety

  • Fireworks are a leading cause of summer fires and injuries.
  • Follow all local laws and housing authority rules-many properties prohibit fireworks entirely.
  • Never allow children to handle fireworks or sparklers, and never light fireworks near buildings, cars, or dry grass.

Grill Safety

  • Use grills only in approved outdoor areas-never inside apartments or on porches or balconies.
  • Keep grills well away from buildings, railings, and anything that can burn.
  • Be extremely careful when using any lighter fluid, gas tanks and flame sources.
  • Never leave a grill unattended, and make sure coals or burners are fully extinguished after use.

  • Stay in the kitchen and keep flammable items away from the stove. Set timers!
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets, especially with fans or air conditioners.
